FAQs

How many people do your members assist?

In any given month our food banks and feeding programs will provide for the needs of over 13,00 people with a hamper containing 3-5 days of food.  Over 26,000 meals are also provided in a month.

Who are those who receive this food?

When taking into account the families and their children, we find 38% are children, 21% have disabilities and 10% are on fixed income such as pensions.  More working people are finding that the money they make is insufficient for getting through a month and they are turning to food banks.

How often can someone attend a food bank?

Some food banks allow for 4 times a year and others allow once a month.  Records are kept.

How can I help?

Donate food, money or time as a volunteer to assist the RFDA in meeting its objective that “no one go hungry in our midst.”

How much of a donation goes to administrative and staffing costs?

From April 1st 2009 until March 31st 2010  of the funds received by RFDA 87% were used for food or distribution of food.

Can I designate my donation for food?

Yes

Yes, the RFDA is a registered charity. You will receive a charitable tax receipt for income tax purposes on donations of $20 or more within 6 weeks to when we receive the donation.

When is the cut off to receive a charitable receipt for a particular year?

Income Tax Receipt donations need to be received by us by December 31 for us to issue a charitable receipt for that year.

I donated several months ago. Why haven’t I received a receipt?

Please call us at 807-622-7440 or write us with as much information about your donation as possible. It’s possible we had an incorrect address for you so when you call or write, tell us your full name as it appeared on your donation, your address, when you made the donation and the amount. It is also helpful if we know how you made the donation: cheque, money order, credit card, online, etc. Include a phone number or email address so we can get in touch with you if we need to.

If you made your donation online through CanadaHelps, you will need to contacthelp@canadahelps.org for your receipt.

I’m making the donation in lieu of a gift. Can you send the receipt to that person?

The Income Tax Act does not allow this. We must issue the receipt to the person making the donation.

I’m writing the cheque, but I want the receipt to go to my partner.

If your cheque is pre-printed with more than one name, we can send the receipt to anyone on the cheque. If your partner’s name is not on the cheque, you should check with the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency about sharing your tax credit with your partner when you file your income tax returns.

What portion of my donation goes to CanadaHelps?

A very modest portion (3 percent) is allocated to CanadaHelps for the cost of credit card merchant rates, per transaction charges, banking and disbursement fees. For more details, please visit their website: www.canadahelps.org/donor_start.asp

I tried to make a donation through CanadaHelps but I ran into problems. How do I get help or find out what happened to my donation
